If the thought of creating your Will and putting in all that information sounds intimidating and overwhelming, this one’s for you. This article breaks it down for you in 6 simple steps so you can check it off your list

Step 1: Have your basic information handy

Getting the following information in place before you begin creating your Will will make the entire process quicker and much more efficient. Here’s what you’ll need.

  • KYC information for yourself (PAN card, driving licence, or similar).
  • Information regarding your assets, such as bank accounts, investments, property, and personal effects. Don’t worry, we won’t ask for the value of any account or property – only enough information to identify it clearly in your Will.
  • Information about the people who will be named in your Will, ie your Beneficiaries, an Executor and a Guardian for your children. We will need their full names, contact information and, in some cases, date of birth.

But, don’t worry if you don’t have all this information just yet. You can begin creating your Will, and add things at your own pace through the course of your Will-creation journey. The information you enter is saved at regular intervals, so you can come back at any time you wish to pick up from where you left off.

Step 2: Clarify your doubts

It’s natural to have questions or doubts when it comes to creating such an important document. If at any point you feel like you’re stuck, or are unsure of what information to include, you can get more information in our resources section, or take the help of our customer support team at any time.

For an extra fee, you can also schedule a call with a lawyer. Our team of experts in Indian Succession Law and Will-drafting have more than 50 years of combined experience at major firms, such as Kotak, Khaitan & Co, and Warmond Trustees, and will be happy to clear your doubts.

Step 3: Generate your Will

Once you have entered all your information and are satisfied with how your Will is set up, click on Generate Will and make a payment. If you have chosen to have your physical Will printed and couriered to you, we will ship the final Will document to you via a secure process. You will also receive a soft copy to download directly.

Step 4: Validate your Will

Under Indian law, a Will is not valid until it is physically signed in the presence of at least two Witnesses. We urge you to complete this process soon after you receive a copy of your Will. No document generated by our system is valid without your signature. YOU have complete control.

Step 5: Store your Will in a safe place

Store your signed and attested Will in a secure place and share its location with your loved ones, if you wish to do so. Do make sure your Executor knows where it is, so your loved ones can avoid hassles later.

Step 6: Update your Will regularly

Your life isn’t static, so why should your Will be? We recommend that you edit and update your Will at regular intervals to reflect changes in your life circumstances (e.g. the acquisition of a new asset, marriage, or the birth of a child). You can do this by simply clicking on Update Will in the Yellow app, and then having your updated Will shipped to you. Remember, the updated Will must be signed and witnessed once again to ensure its validity.

And, that’s it folks! You have now secured your family’s future and ticked an important life task off of your to-do list.
